Julia Hutchinson – “We Were Pretty”
-This is a beautiful piece of songwriting about a past relationship. The lyrics are about when you look back on a relationship and think about all of the wonderful parts with rose colored glasses. The images are fantastic here. The songwriting reminds me a bit of Taylor Swift, to be honest. The phrasing rolls nicely from idea to idea, allowing the acoustic guitar to support the sound well. If you’ve ever had an emotionally rich relationship that didn’t quite make it, this song will definitely connect. Also, the literature reference is *chef’s kiss*.
Skyy – “Back to Me”
-Whatever your expectations are for this song, move them higher… nope, higher still. Ok, now press play. At the opening you’ll feel the emotional layers in the vocal and the unique melodic structure, but trust me it keeps improving. The unhurried style of the vocal shows an emotional intimacy that we don’t hear nearly enough in music today. It’s got a lounge singer’s crooning sincerity layered with a musical theater solo star power, all coming together for an indie folk sound unlike anything you’ve heard before. Skyy has a real gift for soulful songwriting and emotional conveyance. This one is a treat.
Rosie H. Sullivan – “Only A Woman”
-There’s tension in the opening of this song that feels visceral from first listen, but let me tell you that the chorus makes it absolutely worthwhile. Sullivan has an excellent voice that shines through in this track quite well. The rhythm keeps the track moving while the lyrics are about a declaration of selfhood and autonomy. It’s an anthem loaded with meaning that a wide range of our readership will enjoy. It’s the kind of song that you’ll want to let wash over you both sonically and lyrically to soak in it for a bit.
