The Sweeplings – “Can I Have Forever With You?”
-If you’re a fan of folk duos, you’ll find a lot to like in this remarkable song from the Sweeplings. The vocal performance is particularly magical. The instrumentation is good, but the jazzy style of the vocal and overall intimacy really makes the song special. It’s the kind of song you might want for a romantic playlist for date night. It’s slow enough for a slow dance with a sweet sensibility that will make you swoon for that special someone.
Goldschatz – “I’ll Be Here In The Morning” (Townes van Zandt Cover)
-For fans of traditional folk music, Townes van Zandt is downright royalty. To take on one of his songs is to take on a massive challenge, yet Goldschatz pull it off quite well here. The string work feels like it was fashioned in a bygone era and the vocal harmonies are outstanding. This is a wonderful performance of a heartfelt romantic song of devotion. If you’re looking for that emotionally charged connection with someone you love, this song will do it for sure.
Bonnie and Taylor Sims – “Side By Side”
-From the first time I clicked play on this song, I knew I liked it. There’s a brightness in the rhythm section that permeates the track. The optimism in the lead vocal does a great job of establishing the positivity of being together with a partner. The vocal harmonies have quintessential folk connection, allowing the listener to feel an emotional connection. The lyrics focus on the importance of commitment; “it’s you and me baby, side by side.” This is about promising to stick it out no matter what. It’s an ethic and a promise that feels absolutely counter cultural at this point. It’s a great tune.
