Clayton Nile Young – “Chisel and Stone”
-Nothing says country music like a good metaphor. “Mark my words in chisel and stone” to mark the declaration of intent here, this is a song about a serious person. It’s a bit about loneliness, but mostly about deciding purpose. Everything from the guitar to the whistle solo seems to carry more than its share of the weight here. Young’s vocal is outstanding, conveying passion and purpose equal to the weighty lyrics. This is a good one, folks.
Cole Scheifele – “Here To Stay”
-This isn’t the first time we’ve featured Scheifele and probably won’t be the last, either. The easy going acoustic style here works really well. The expressiveness in the little phrasing lines is quite enjoyable. It’s a promise of being “here in the morning.” The song chronicles devotion and sets a dreamy hope for a future together. It’s the kind of song that goes perfect with a cabin in the woods with the one you love. The classic instrumentation and easy going lyrics are a match made in heaven.
Nelleke – “terracotta flowers”
-I love the vocal on this song. There’s an almost prayerful gentleness to the delivery of each line. The image of the “terracotta flowers in the sun” is itself artful. The calmness of the guitar does a really nice job of providing a basis for the quality vocal. There’s a sincerity to the lyrics that make it feel like a dear friend sharing something important. The intimacy of the recording stands out to me right away. If you’re looking for a peaceful, artful piece of folk songwriting definitely consider this track from Nelleke.
