FELIX – “This is fine”
-I like the opening of this song, but I love the chorus. The harmonies on the chorus bring together some of the classic elements of older rock music with contemporary production. It makes for a fantastic style and sound. The energetic guitar work establishes a good basis for the vocal to stand out. The lyrics focus on a breakdown of communication in a relationship. The chorus explains the importance of escaping to get fresh air and a new perspective. It’s unfortunately a concept that will be relatable for a lot of listeners.
The Coral Gables – “I’m gonna set it all aside”
-This song is as much throwback country as it is rock in its soul. I don’t think I would ever tell my friends it’s a country song, though, but it does capture the spirit of that Roy Orbison era of music genre bending. The lyrics here remind me a bit of bands like the Driveby Truckers and the expressive attitude. If you’re looking for a “devil may care” attitude and a rip roaring good bit of rock-infused Americana instrumentation, you’ll find a lot to like on this one. It reminds me of singalong party songs meant for a bar full of people to slur and sing and have a great time.
Sunburnt – “Repeating”
-There’s an up tempo pop punk energy to this track that’s sure to stand out for a lot of folks. The opening is good, but the song really catches fire on the chorus. The refrain has some magical vocal harmonies that remind me of the golden age of pop punk (early 2000s). It would be amazing to hear this chorus live because it absolutely soars. The lyrics are about getting caught in a destructive cycle, crying out for help getting off the cycle. I’m not sure if this is about mental health or some other destructive behavior, but it seems to be expressed in earnest here. It will be relatable to a lot of people.
