Man Alive – “Colours”
-Some people use air conditioning to cool off in the summer, but Man Alive just use incredible melodic lines and great keys. The energy of this track is absolutely fantastic. I knew I liked it from first listen. The understated vocal work allows the listener to sit back and take it in. I could picture listening to this on beach. The lyrics are about embracing each others’ differences (all the colors). Summer is a great time to get your weird on and embrace who you are (and who others are as well). It’s a bop.
Zoe Ko – “Rib Cage”
-The opening line of this incredible song is, “I got a disease where I miss things that were never there.” Wow. It just stays like that – thoughtful, engaging, and sharp-witted. It’s a romantic song in a lot of ways. The expressive vocal is couched in contemporary pop and rock elements, creating a mood that is both desperate as well as emotional. The lyrics seem to cry out for connection and reciprocation in a romantic as well as a deeply human way. Ko’s vocal is clear, emotional, and quite moving. This is a great song that shows the versatility and power of the indie pop genre.
Little Dume – “Adrenaline”
-When I first heard this song I thought it was more of a power rock track than indie pop, but the more I listen the more I hear how the smooth lines really do feel like indie pop. It’s a song about – well, adrenaline. It’s the rush you feel when freedom goes to your head. It’s a “driving down the open road” kind of song that helps the listener to crave the boost of adrenaline as well. The harmonies do a nice job of highlighting the quality of the lead vocal. For all of the adventure junkies out there, this is a veritable theme song.
