Three indie folk tracks to seep down deep into your soul

Brandon De La Cruz – “I Love You Babe” (Michael Hurley cover)
-I actually didn’t know the original of this song, but De La Cruz captured my attention with this one right away. Sometimes whispery vocals can be challenging, but in this case they do a great job of pulling the listener in. There’s a sincerity in the romantic lyrics here that makes them stand out. If you’ve ever been “so happy” that you want “to cry,” then this is definitely the song for you. The stripped down simplicity is a compliment to this one, creating a genuine sense of intimacy.

Jorgen Kjellgren – “Been Living Low”
-The opening atmospheric style of this song creates a sense of mystery right from the start. Kjellgren’s vocal comes in strong, creating an engaging and rich sense to the song. The environment feels full and like the listener wants to step into the environment. I think (and don’t quote me on this), it’s about stepping out of a period of depression or just plain sadness. “It seems like a lot of work to get back home.” This is a song about moving from that place into a rich and rewarding place of music, banter, and laughter. If you’re in a dark place right now, spin this song and be encouraged by Kjellgren’s message that it gets better.

Sean Martin West – “For You”
-Fans of classic folk music are going to love this song from Sean Martin West. I don’t make this statement lightly to say that it’s well in the vein of Simon and Garfunkel. The movement, the lightness, and definitely the articulation on the acoustic guitar all remind me of a classic mid 20th century style. The subtle harmonies serve to create a sense of connection and cohesion. The lyrics are about desire, feeling “restless for you.” It’s a song about the excitement in the early part of a relationship, hoping that the other person is as crazy about you as you are about them. It’s a feel good song with a beautifully rich acoustic arrangement and exceptional production quality.
