Richard Simeonoff – “Someday”
-From the first time I heard this track, I knew it was something that I wanted to support on EarToTheGround. Everything from the sonic construction to the lyrical concept feels familiar and relatable. The “punch my ticket out of here” concept is common for those of us who grew up in the Rust Belt. Even though I am a proud resident of the region now, there are a lot of my peers who lived the life shared in Simeonoff’s lyrics. The timeless Americana narrative form comes through really well here. Fans of Rayland Baxter and similar electric guitar-based storytelling tunes will dig this one a lot.
VOYAGR – “Born a believer”
-Years ago a friend took me to a Needtobreathe concert and I was absolutely blown away by that style of folk/Americana music that had a hard driving energy with exceptional harmonies. VOYAGR have a sound that fits within that same mold. This track has some outstanding harmonies and inspiring lyrical style. I can personally relate to the “trying to outrun my anxious self” lyric for sure. There are nice pockets of “singalong” moments with some that the listener can just jam out. It’s a really fascinating blend of styles that all feel like a natural mix that falls under the Americana style.
Jamie McDell – “Madeline”
-Jamie McDell’s writing has an early Taylor Swift acoustic narrative spirit to it that works really well. The quality of the vocal is absolutely outstanding, allowing the lyrics to go down smooth. It’s a song about moving on from a miserable relationship, learning to love herself again. It’s a tragic and all-too-common storyline that McDell tells with clarity and empathy. It’s a beautifully sad song with an aura of redemption to it.
