Rebecca Porter – “Clockin’ out”
-If you’re looking for a throwback to the heyday of country music, give this track a spin. Porter sings with the honkytonk in her soul on this unique track. The stories of the people in the song feel genuine. The steel guitar sets the mood and the vocal is excellent. It feels like the kind of song that tells the story of real country folks. The line, “you learn to make due some how” resonates really well in our present day, despite having a throwback flavor. If I had a roots country station, I’d play this track every hour. It’s a great song.
Meir Levine – “Wherever I run”
-When we say we like “gritty, modern Americana,” this is what we’re talking about. Levine has a style that pushes forward with moving electric guitars and a steady rhythm. There’s a sense of movement in the instrumentation, while the vocal feels like it leans backward a little bit in more of a Tom Petty sensibility. The combination makes for a balanced vibe that feels like a perfect mix of folk rock and modern Americana. The lyrics focus on the complexity of an out-of-control relationship; for anyone who has ever felt listless in a relationship gone sour, this song will resonate. The song feels good despite the emotions feeling so bad.
My Sister, My Brother – “My Sister, My Brother”
-No, that’s not a typo. The song name and the artist name are the same. It’s an interesting track with some amazing harmonies. I don’t typically use the copy that artists send us, but in this case the quote, “It has an easy way about it” is perfect. The song came from the isolation and difficulty of the pandemic. In this case, rather than focusing on the malaise of that moment, the song focuses on the theme of togetherness. It’s really beautiful writing with a timeless country/Americana energy to it. Of course I love the harmonies, but beyond that it has a modern Americana instrumentation and energy that I find goes down very smooth. I have to agree with the sentiment that it has an “easy way about it.” Amen and amen.
