Paul Cherry feat. Kate Oblinger – “OBO”
-This song has it all; elements of pop, jazz, and funk all meet in this expressive indie pop with tons of eclectic energy. I love the way the chord changes roll together for a truly unique style. The lyrics have a visceral feeling to them. The ethereal nature of Kate Oblinger’s vocal is perfect as a counterpoint to Paul Cherry’s more grounded energy; the two dance in a delicate balance on this track. The higher pitched instrument (theremin, I think?) sounds amazing… with a soaring style that captures the essence of the 1970s in a beautifully unpredictable way for the song.
Mom Rock – “Bullseye”
-The energy of this track is absolutely amazing. It feels like a dance tune with some exceptional throwback elements that meet with this witty, contemporary energy. The syncopation of the rhythmic basis on the song is the defining characteristic, yet the snappy lyrics and vocals are a great feature as well. Altogether, the song has a really exceptional bit of vibrancy that’s sure to find a following among fans of college rock and a slightly more sophisticated subset of the indie rock world.
Waliens – “Always the same”
-I’ve been a sucker for a good hook-laden indie rock tune for as long as I can remember. The sense of melody in this track from Waliens invites the listener right into the song’s energy. I love the chromatic chord change and the way the guitar provides a good basis and the vocal bounces right along. The snappy and energetic electric guitars make for an engaging sound. I could jam to this track over and over. In fact, I’m putting Waliens on a short list of “ones to watch” because of how good this track is. Throw it on your summer 2023 playlist and dig it every time it comes up. Thank me later.
