Snake Oil – “Breathe again”
-I changed my mind on the genre of this song so many times… and to be honest I’m still not sure that it can be nailed down. There are elements of rock, folk, and certainly a sort of late 90s alt rock vibe that really works. Something about the tone of the lead vocal and the overall acoustic undertone reminds me a bit of vintage Sheryl Crow. The soaring quality of the vocal on the chorus feels especially satisfying in connecting with a timeless vibe. “Hoping that love comes again.” Yes, a worthwhile hope. This is a great tune for fans of timeless alt rock music.
Daytime TV – “jessica”
-The up tempo style here is going to win over a lot of fans right away. There’s an indie rock energy about the song that is immediately easy to recognize. The rhythm and excitement from the guitars provides a solid basis to the song. When the quality rock vocals enter the track, the song feels like a deeply satisfying bit of rock songwriting. It’s a love song about someone named “jessica” with all the devotion and emotion of other first-name rock tunes. The jam energy on the chorus puts me in mind of some great early 90s alt rock tracks.
spacemen – “sleep”
-If you’re a fan of contemplative storytelling rock with clever lyrics and snappy production, give spacemen’s “sleep” a spin. It’s got a really phenomenal explanation of what goes on with an overactive imagination when it blends with the terror of insomnia. The song has a quaint approachable style, but it captures a really awful feeling. For folks who struggle to sleep and struggle with mental health, this is an absolutely outstanding song. Even if you can’t fully relate to the lyrics, the imaginative and creative layering of vocals with other production elements make it a truly “alternative” form of rock music in the best way possible.
