Steve Stout – “Not havin fun”
-Everything about Steve Stout’s sound feels like a bygone era. The effect on the guitars, the quality of the vocal, and the overall production style feels like a late 70s folk rock jam. I totally dig it. The expressive vocals remind me of an artist we’ve featured a good bit named Daryl Rahn. There’s a lot to like about the accessibility of lyrics about the mundane aspects of life with “nothing left.” It’s relatable and has a tone of good energy that’s sure to find a lot of support among our folk rock fans.
Honey Creek – “Burnt bitter”
-This is admittedly a pop punk song more than a conventional rock track, but I’m a huge fan of this sound. Fans of bands like Yellowcard and Sum41 will find a lot to like here. I described this to a friend as “angry pop punk.” I don’t think the band will take offense to that at all. There’s an unapologetic aggressiveness to the track. I can image the live performances are off the walls. There’s this really fascinating dual melody that happens in the second half of the track. It’s a lot going and hard to follow in some ways, but the chaos echoes the message of the track and the inherent confusion of the emotional experience being expressed. It’s fantastic.
The Dullards – “Send her back”
-When I ran across this submission, I just… stayed with it. You know what I mean? It starts out pleasant and I just… stayed with it. The vocal is good and the storytelling is a nice hook. If you’ve ever “put on a happy face” then you can relate to the sentiment of the song. It’s got this approachable style about it that feels like you’ve heard it before but can’t quite place where. There’s something a little conspiracy theory about the lyrics mentioning the FBI and someone being sent back to the main character. That said, I really enjoy the melody and the delivery on the electric guitars. I just can’t help but feel like I want to know more about the story of this song.
