Eliza Harrison Smith – “August”
-This is a song that will make you feel a little hot under the proverbial collar. It’s about the sweltering heat of the month of August… but it’s also about the heat of a summer romance. Smith writes with an up tempo pop-flavored folk energy throughout the track. An easy comparison might be someone like Tessa Violet, that said the overall composition certainly deserves to stand on its own merits. The melody works really well and the energy of the track feels fresh and optimistic, all the while focusing on a nostalgic moment that a lot of people can relate to from their own lives.
Meir Levine – “Summer to summer”
-It’s easy to hear why this is a “summer” track as it’s in the title. That said, the folk rock energy of this track is really enjoyable. The effect on the electric guitar creates the perfect vibe for the message of the song. The overall composition just “clicks” for me on this one. The harmonies on the chorus invite the listener to sing along. It feels like it could have been written and released in the mid-70s in the heyday of folk rock music. I dig it a lot.
Rapt – “Threads”
-If you like calming acoustic folk music, there’s a lot to enjoy about Rapt’s songwriting. The song feels like a comforting conversation with a dear friend. The way the acoustic guitar lulls the listener allows the lyrics to come through with a gentle sincerity. Something about the song feels like sitting around a campfire or a small room with a friend. The composition reminds me of a band called Planes on Paper that we featured a while back. The gentle folk style with exceptional acoustic guitar work is really perfect on this track from Rapt. It’s a pretty song.
