Three new indie folk songs that connect the past and the present

The January Lanterns – “Lantern of Love”
-There’s a real charm to this song. From the first time I heard it, I felt something that was both old time and very new. The combination of accessible lyricism and colorful instrumentation makes for a really enjoyable listening experience. The mandolin, banjo, steel guitar, and guitars… all work well to establish a timeless sound. It’s the kind of music that we really enjoy supporting because it feels comfortable. Even when life is hard or complicated, it’s a lantern of love that lights the way.

Lydia Kaseta – “Hate the day”
-This track definitely is on the line between indie folk and indie pop… and to be honest, I’m not even a little mad about it. Lydia Kaseta has one of my favorite voices that I’ve found so far in 2022. There’s a clarity and sincerity in each line of this track that allows for the listener to connect immediately. I am impressed by the sense of melody and the vocal phrasing through this whole performance. The passion in the lyrical message here about wanting someone to continue writing love songs about you… wow. This is a gem.

Freedom Fry – “You know the way”
-This is good old fashioned “sing along” folk music done incredibly well. This is Pete Seeger “sing in the round” style folk music and, honestly, we need a LOT more of it in the music world today. The uplifting lyrics work to encourage us to press on with life, finding our way “home.” There’s such a beautiful metaphorical energy in the lyrics that is matched with the vocal harmonies on the track. The lighthearted energy here feels just right when dealing with such a powerful concept of finding our purpose in life. The song just make me feel younger… full of that vibrant energy of seeking your place in the world and way to wherever you still are deciding to go. It’s beautiful.
