SAMAH – “Femme Fatale”
-If you’ve been around music as long as I have, you’ve seen versions of disco dance music in virtually every possible style. Here we have it again with a fresh new crispness and, honestly, it works. The lyrical message of the song is about desire, dancing, and enjoying the moment. The vocal is uncharacteristically clear for this style of music. If you appreciated artists like Three Dog Night in another era, then you’ll appreciate what SAMAH are up to with this song. It’s an expression of desire and connection that works really well, even if it is just for a one night fling.
SAMAH – “Headlines Across Us”
-If you’re a fan of crispy pop-flavored rock music, definitely check this one out. I had a really hard time deciding what genre this is. There’s even a dash of soul in the vocal and overall styling here. I’d say if you like Motown and other soul-adjacent genres, definitely give this one a spin. SAMAH have this unique flavor that tends to make me say “yes!” on almost everything I’ve heard. I’m not sure about the musicology of the chord decisions here, but it just feels comfortable. The listener is encouraged to lean in and feel the relationship at the core of the song. “Everything is so strange, but why can’t we just change?” I’m thinking this might be about a nation… or a people… or a culture… more than it is about a specific relationship. Nevertheless, what a groove and listening experience. I dig this a lot.
