Three indie rock tracks that show we’re not crazy for featuring folk and indie rock on our site

John Calvin Abney – “Last Chance”
-If you’re a fan of folk music that has a cool rock edge to it (think Rayland Baxter), then you’ll find a lot to like from John Calvin Abney’s music. Everything from the phrasing to the clear electric guitar production all makes for a satisfying listen. “Could we have known then when our last chance was?” Gosh, I’ve been living this reality; I think it’s a byproduct of middle age. You have all of these moments that are the last time you do something (or see someone) but you don’t know it. I love the sincerity of this message and the easy going production that makes a seamless connection from listener to the meaning of the track. Also, for those who are still reading, stick around for those harmonies around 2:30 for an extra special ear candy-style feeling. I dig it.

NIGHT FLIGHT – “Lucy”
-I’ve enjoyed this track with every listen; the rich production style makes the guitars and vocals shine through well. The harmonies on the chorus remind me of something that could have come out of the mid-70s (think The Band, Eagles, etc.). There’s a really rooted energy to this track that makes it resonate for me. The lyrics are about looking forward to hanging out with someone, even with the complexity of relationships. The “I’m gonna win you around” line conveys great confidence and this youthful hopefulness that I feel deep in my soul. Sometimes when I hear a song I like some part of it, but with this track I literally love every detail. The instrumentation, the mood, the lyrics, the production… I mean it’s all so good. The harmonies are my favorite part, but really it’s a masterful bit of songwriting and performance.

Krysten Perok – “If You Don’t Mind”
-There’s a lovely syncopation to this song that makes it stand out right away. I appreciate the easy going blend of folk and rock on this track. The vocal is approachable and easy to connect. The lyrics are rooted and relatable, “give my mom a hug for me” is such a common experience. There’s something inherently plainspoken about this track that makes it feel genuine. In terms of genre it’s definitely folk rock, but it has a pop energy to it that just feels comfortable. It’s the kind of song that if it was playing at a party, everyone would say “hey, I like this… who is it?” And unlike so many bands, I don’t have any easy comparison for Perok’s work. It just sounds like Krysten Perok… distinctive, enjoyable, and cool.
