Charlotte Morris – “created me”
-I might be convinced to move this track from folk to “adult contemporary” as it does have some genre bending elements to it. More than anything, it feels like mature singer songwriter content with a depth of lyrical energy that’s really rare in music today. I appreciate that the lyrics feel like you can connect, while they also make you take pause and assess how you’ve become who you are. The production layers combine elements of folk, pop, and easy going rock for a sound that feels full and energetic. Fans of that “adult contemporary” style of mature singer songwriter styles will enjoy this a great deal.
beaming ft. Field Medic – “slow sinkin”
-If understated folk music is your jam, definitely click on this one. I appreciate the unhurried sincerity in this track. What I find particularly remarkable, though, is that the vocal is understated yet the lyrics are all clear and easy to follow. It’s really a song about pessimism and how focusing on how things aren’t going to work out doesn’t really make it any easier. I can relate to this sentiment. As we look at a crumbling situation around us (socially, politically, culturally, etc.) this is important to remember that we’ll get nothing out of “wasting time thinking life is just slow sinking…” It’s a vibey, chill track that begs the listener to sit back, relax, and not stress things that are beyond our control. I dig it.
Caleb J. Murphy – “Bad News”
-I’m a big fan of this style and this particular performance from Caleb J. Murphy. The acoustic guitar has a wonderful color resonance that permeates the track. The vocal cuts through clearly and with conviction. I appreciate the lyrical sentiment, “I’m done with the bad news.” It’s about moving on, new beginnings, and not focusing on “heavy hearts.” This is a confession, a prayer, a lament, and a declaration of new purpose. It works really well and the overall mood of the song feels comfortable. I’d be happy putting this on a coffee shop playlist just as easily as a singer songwriter list. It’s definitely worth your consideration.
