Imaginary Monsters – “Clever”
-The formula for a great pop punk song is pretty straightforward: you need solid power chords, a soaring vocal, and an absolutely searing lyrical message that is usually about an ex. This song gets credit for all three. The vocal harmonies are actually really well done, which provides that solid Blink-182 vibe to the sound. I’m sure there are better nuanced comparisons, but for me it’s Blink and maybe Good Charlotte that I hear with this sound. I have to say this genre will always remind me of the early 2000s, driving entirely too fast thinking entirely too much about girls who were entirely not a good fit for me. I’m sure *none* of you can relate…
Lost Sea – “Born Alone”
-I was hooked by this lead vocal the very first time I clicked play. The energy here is infectious, pulling me right in. The percussion and overall power chords keep the song moving, but it’s the vocal that wins the day. The timing shift leading to the chorus sets a really powerful mood for the track. The lyric, “it feels like I’m searching for home again; I need a second wind” really pops for me. I could get into depth of more lyrics in the song, but it’s the vibe for me that really does. It’s far more existential than you might expect for a song with “pop” in the genre descriptor… but trust me on this one, it deserves your attention.
