This Land Is Your Land (Woody’s Home Tape)
It is rare to listen in on an artist at home. Rarer still is it to come across a legendary artist decades after their death. Thankfully, the estate of classic troubadour and social conscience Woody Guthrie have come across an intimate collection of home recordings. Of course, the stand out here is his most renown track, “This Land is Your Land”. Sung with his trademark conviction and spirit, the track shines light on an artist at work but also, invites us into his world. The beauty of the new release is its rawness (there are coughs and bustling sounds in the background which add to the ambiance).
The timing of this release is especially appreciated as America is currently in the middle of a fascist resurgence. The timeless quality of Guthrie’s clarion call comes to us when we need it most. It gives us courage, reminding us of what should define our “land”. Turns out, compassion and equality are just as timeless.
