Chloe Foy – “Blinkers”
Readers of our site will recognize the name Chloe Foy. The UK songwriter has been a favorite of ours for years at this point. Her expressive vocals are ripe with edge and suspicion, even when she sings a sort of love song like “Blinkers”. Her talent has continued to grow with this track and her creative instrumentation. Bopping from genre to genre, she fails any label you place upon her. We think this a near perfect summer track, or frankly any season.
Maxwell Rose – “Like You Do”
Call us sentimental, but we love the latest romantic pop anthem from Maxwell Rose. While our critics heart are typically black, there is a small space that great songwriting can still penetrate. Lyrically, we would put “Like You Do” next to any of the big names strewn across radio dials and Spotify playlists currently. While this is his strength, the musicianship is earnest and creative. Blending acoustic with an old timey piano and folk pop callbacks, the track is true gem of a track which will bring Rose much deserved praise.
Filiah – “On & On”
There is a classic nostalgic quality within the sound of this Austrian songwriter. Filiah contains multitudes of personality and longing within the running time of every one of her tracks. Facing forward even as she looks back, her songwriting is deeply introspective and rare. In “On & On”, we find the artist wrestling with shame and choice in earnest. Her ability to carry her voice is incredibly impactful and nuanced. Honestly, if her lyrics were only half as good as they are, we would still pay to hear her croon. Luckily, she has combined a compelling voice with an equally compelling lyrical exploration. Filiah is a can’t miss songwriter.
