David B. Archibald – “Stay Here Together – Live”
-I know… I know… as soon as he starts singing you’re going to say, “wow, he sounds a lot like Chris Stapleton.” You’re not wrong. But I hope that this song gets to you in more ways than just a “sounds like” comp, because there’s a spiritual depth to the lyricism here that’s worth stopping what you’re doing to pay serious attention. The lyrical delivery is almost prayerful in its sincerity; I appreciate the simplicity of the production that allows the vocal to soar. It’s a heart’s lament, a crying out, “but can we stay here together?” It’s a valid question. It’s existential and powerful. I hope a lot of people will engage with this meaningful song.
Big Little Lions – “Nothing Makes Sense Anymore”
-If you’ve been around my curation for any length of time, you know I’m a huge fan of folksy duo harmonies. There aren’t many doing it better than Big Little Lions, an artist we’ve featured in the past. This latest track from them has an optimism that we absolutely need in this current state of things. Even when things don’t make sense, we gotta keep on walking, “cuz this is not the end.” I appreciate the buoyancy of the song, despite the heavy lyrical theme. If you’re struggling with what feels like the world crumbling around you, this song is the type of brightness and truth seeking that we need in these times. I love the harmonies, the melodic structure, and definitely support the lyrical message here.
