Jason Piquette – “Drop the Gun”
-If you’ve been around this site for a while, you’ll remember me writing about Joshua Hyslop several times. I’m happy to report that Jason Piquette is featuring a similar style of soft-spoken folk music with deeply moving lyrics. In fact, when I got to the end of the first verse of this song I just stopped right in my tracks and said “wow.” The chorus swings with a beautiful, accessible style. It’s rare to find music that is written with such care and delicacy. Every line, every phrase of this song feels like it was put there on purpose. It’s delicate and engaging with each section emerging with its own light and vibrancy. Songs like this are literally why I started writing about music. It should be widely known.
Ghost of a Soulman – “Still Love You”
-If a lyrically satisfying folk song with an easy going rhythm is your cup of tea, let me tell you this is a good one. Even after a few listens, it still sort of puzzles me (in a good way). It’s clearly a love song. “I still love you and I’m blue.” I guess it’s a breakup and heartache song, but it honestly feels so good. The line “just kill me one more time, baby” might be the bluesiest blues line possible, so I do connect with it in that regard. It’s got elements of folk, blues, and Americana all together for something that feels wholly original. It’s such a heartfelt confessional style that I’m really glad to have the privilege of listening; I hope you all will take some time to sway with this good work.
Marco – “Just For You”
-When I first clicked on this song, I was struck by the timing. It’s not every day that I hear a love song with this unique timing. Then I could tell that the voicing and overall style on the guitar was definitely unique and upon exploring the background of the artist, I realize what I was hearing was a Brazilian flair. It’s an intimate love song that absolutely feels comfortable and cathartic to listen to. If you’ve ever been in love, you’ll understand the reason for the dramatic chromatic chord changes and lyrics that soar (like the chorus) about someone who makes you feel light and wonderful. This is an exceptional piece of songwriting and a joy to share.
