Three Americana tracks to help you end the year on a good note

Cat Rose Smith – “What I’m For”
-Cat Rose Smith is one of those artists that I don’t know personally, but I feel like I know because of the connection the music forges. The calm and accessible instrumentation is delicate Americana, allowing the listener to connect easily with the lyrics. The voice, as always, is excellent. The combination makes for a style of Americana that’s sure to win over a lot of fans. This is the type of music that made country music such a force in the 20th century. If country radio today played music like this, I’d still listen to it. The soothing style of the steel guitar, the chill groove in the percussion, and the overall production mix is excellent. This is a gem.

Charles Walker – “Stay for a while”
-There’s a cathartic, easy going style in the beginning of this song that works really well. The calm energy of the voice puts a smile on my face with every listen. The unhurried style of the lyrics asks someone to “just stay for a while.” The connotation certainly seems romantic. The lyric is also bittersweet, though, because it’s about staying “until someone else comes along.” But it’s a beautiful and thoughtful reflection that matches the instrumentation well. It’s genuine and comfortable.

David B. Archibald – “Spinning Around”
-When I tell people that I listen to Americana and roots country music, this is precisely what I mean. The sincerity in this vocal and overall performance is outstanding. Archibald sings with a soulful style that pulls me in every listen. The steel guitar sings like a duo vocal on this recording. The full band harmonies are my favorite part of the song. “Tomorrow ain’t a given…” is a key lyric here, a song about appreciating being with someone who brings stability to your chaotic life. If you’ve ever felt out of control and needed a partner to calm things down, this song is definitely for you. Fans of Chris Stapleton and that overall subgenre of country music will find a lot to like here.
