Three new tracks within the Americana subgenre that are not on your radar (but should be)!

Tania Elizabeth – “What you need”
-There’s a calmness in this vocal that captures my attention with every listen. I’m sure there are some good comps in classic country music to this vocal, but honestly I think Tania Elizabeth deserves to stand on her own here. This is a beautiful, captivating sound. It’s ultimately a song about desire and trying to demand everything from others while still finding it unfulfilling. It’s about finding contentment (or the inability to do so). I love the beautiful philosophical underpinning that puts me in mind of mid-century folk revival music with more of a classic country instrumentation; it balances nicely.

Katie Nicholas – “You Kill Me”
-The easy going country energy of this track feels just right. In any other era of history, this would play on country music radio. Unfortunately in the 21st century we’ll have to call it Americana. But, to be honest, I’m glad we get to claim this sound for Americana. The quality of the vocal is undeniable and the steel guitar gives the track a lot of texture. The lyrics are about how “we are one in the same” and the reasons that a relationship should work out (against all odds). It’s sort of a preemptive breakup song, “you hurt me in the softest way.” It’s adorable and sweet, with a genuinely bittersweet sentimentality to it. If there was justice in this world, this would be a top 10 country song.

Jeán et Joie – “MA”
-From the first time I clicked on this mysterious, meaningful song I was hooked. The guitar carries a bit of intrigue, but the vocal is what really pulled me in. The combination is magical. It’s a narrative about finding a new start after tragedy. There’s such a unique energy to the song it deserves to be widely heard and shared. It’s got literature, philosophy, and depth the is certainly worth exploring. This fits with something I’ve written about in the past that I like to call artful folk; it doesn’t jangle. It goes deep.
