Three indie pop tunes that will get you ready for an introspective weekend

Annie Lee Rose – “Pretty Girls Cry”
-There’s a minimalist production in the opening of this song that captured my attention… and then the vocal enters the track and definitely won me over. The introspective, thoughtful lyrics are amazing. “You’re a shitty guy with pretty lies but you’re pretty good at making pretty girls cry.” I have to say the modulation at the end of that line absolutely reminds me of Lizzy McAlpine (and 2024 is unapologetically the Year of Lizzy for me, so I’m HERE FOR THIS). The delicate style is full of raw emotion that resonates. Even though I’m probably not the target demographic here (40+ suburban dad), but I have to say that the song is inherently accessible. The performance is outstanding and the writing is top notch. I’ll be following Annie Lee Rose closely and spinning this one often.

Culture Kid – “New Found Evil”
-Sometimes I listen to music that just makes me feel chill. This is definitely a song that fits in that mold. This time of year I tend to feel this deep need to mellow out. The majority of the fall is so active and busy, so when these chilly months begin I just want to stay home and be cozy. This track feels like it captures that ethos in both lyrics and instrumentation. The chilled out rock guitars and mellow vocal style works great. Although, I will say the lyric “every day’s a new found evil” feels a bit of a juxtaposition for the relaxed energy of the track, I still enjoy it a great deal. I hope you all will give it a shot and vibe out like I do with this track.

CELINE – “everything is gonna be fine”
-I love the production in the opening of this song. Something about the delicate layered vocal here feels absolutely right for the song. The lyrics are intriguing, featuring a broken relationship and the desire to move on. The reassurance that things are going to be fine is important and shows maturing. I appreciate the shifting dynamics through the song from contemplative personal lines to these massive swells of emotional pop goodness… it’s really satisfying to listen and dance. I’m far from an LA songstress, but even I can relate to the sentiments captured in this captivating track.
