Tower12 – “Nothing Left”
-If you’ve ever felt a breakup, this song will be relatable. It’s about how everything seems completely different after the end of a relationship, but yet you can’t quite keep the person out of your mind. The lamenting “why can’t you ever tell the truth? You keep on splitting me in two.” Wow. That’s emotion. It’s such a raw, visceral bit of writing. The guitars have this moodiness to them that works perfect for the message of the song. The vocalist sings with passion, but without going overboard with the emotionalism; it’s a well balanced sound that would have been right at home in the early 2000s rock world of bands like Jimmy Eat World.
Limbo Days – “The Jester”
-This is a GREAT song. It’s a bit theatrical with this snappy beat and emotional lyrical delivery. The beat invites the listener in. The staccato phrasing is contraposed with these intricate melodic moments that literally feel like they could be from a Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. The lyrics are about a jester, a character who doesn’t take anything seriously and pays the price in the end. It’s as much a Joker type character as anything. The delicate bounce between rock and pop elements with the undercurrent of theatricality makes this a truly unique listening experience. The vocal performance is outstanding on a song that feels both exciting and somewhat unsettling (in a good way).
string lights – “chicago avenue”
-Look, I’m not saying I approved this song because the opening chords reminded me of a Lizzy McAlpine song… but I am saying it got me to listen a bit longer. And you know what? I really like this vibe. It reminds me of some of the chill singer songwriters we’ve featured over the years. I appreciate the clarity of the piano as it balances with the understated vocal style. In some ways, it reminds me of some of Noah Gundersen’s more recent stuff. So… I mean if you know me, the fact that I’ve name dropped both Lizzy and Noah in this song review means I really like it. There’s an intimacy in the recording that I absolutely adore. This is the kind of folksy alt rock tune that demands multiple listens and just… sitting with it. I sure will do more of that myself; I love this kind of music.
