Red Light Camera – “Heartbreak Girl”
-If you’re looking for an upbeat rock tune, you’ll find a good one with Red Light Camera’s latest. It’s a song about a heartbreaker who seems to have a tendency to find a lot of suitors that she leaves wanting. The phrasing and style of the rock is different than a lot of what we cover, but the guitars absolutely soar and the vocal is quality throughout. I’m a huge fan of the chromatic chord changes on the chorus. It’s not specifically punk rock, but it reminds me of a lot of the pop punk that I used to love back in the early 2000s. Fans of upbeat rock should definitely check out this emotional and relatable new track.
April Fools – “Take Me Home”
-The upbeat rock style here is definitely going to stand out for a lot of music fans. The understated vocal feels just right for a sort of genre blending energy with rock types from the 90s well into the 2010s. The fuzz effects on the guitars are just enough to make them stand out without distorting them from the mix. It’s a lyrical declaration of desire; the main character is singing about a flirty interaction at the bar, hoping to go home with the object of their desire. It’s sultry in just the right way without being too overwrought; it’s an anthemic rock song with a concept that is relatable (albeit unwise; we officially do not support going home with strangers). Nevertheless, great rock song!
Andrew Beck – “Abaco”
-When we received this track, I was pretty much immediately ready to approve the song. The quality is evident from the start of the track. If I was on the fence at all, the vocal layering definitely won me over. It’s a song about someone with incredible energy that makes you want to be with them all the time. The guitar breaks and overall experimental energy of this track does a good job of blending aspects of folk rock, pop rock, and bluesy rock for something that feels genuine and original. This is the kind of risk taking that we appreciate and want to support. This is a definite spin for fans of a wide range of rock subgenres.
