Theo Kandel – “Honeydew Moon”
-Theo Kandel has become one of those “click yes as I click play” kind of artists. He just doesn’t miss; the songs all have this sense of folk storytelling with a fantastic vocal. I am a fan. Kandel’s style has transcended just good and moved to great with comparisons to Rayland Baxter and Adam Melchor making it easy to hear why he’s so good. The clever lyrical work is matched with excellent guitar lines. My favorite, though, is probably the way Kandel strings together great phrases with such a high quality vocal. The imagery of making the most of life under a “Honeydew Moon” carries that charm from other performances onto this one. I definitely smile every time I hear this one on my own playlist.
Georgie Winchester – “take your pain”
-Take a breath before you click play on this one. I can’t quite explain why, but it’s the kind of song that makes me hold my breath and listen closely. It’s emotional in the way that Lizzy McAlpine is… and that’s about the highest praise I can think of right now. Winchester sings with clarity and precision while managing to convey the brokenhearted pain at the heart of the song. The slow developing piano work provides a gorgeous base for Winchester’s outstanding vocal. The lyrics are about sharing someone’s pain, which is a deeply human and important empathetic action. This is a beautiful song that taps into something really powerful; you just have to listen.
Aspenyarrow – “Apiary (Live)”
-It’s incredibly difficult to sing well live, but Aspenyarrow has accomplished that on this recording. The light energy of the vocal does a nice job of establishing a relaxing sound for the listener. The lyrics tell a story of natural imagery with a dash of tongue-in-cheek humor. It’s a delightful little song that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still manages to carry an emotional message. Remember what love is worth. Enjoy this light, sweet composition and the meaningful message it conveys.
