Julian Taylor – “Ain’t Life Strange”
-The voice… I mean, dang, the VOICE. Julian Taylor has one of those low baritone voices that makes everyone pay attention. Once he starts crooning – a bit like another notable (James) Taylor – the listener is pulled into a fascinating folksy Americana tune. It’s a bit existential, a bit philosophical, and a lot interesting for the listener. The line about wishing that time could stand still or that time travel is real is… yes, absolutely. This guy is definitely tapping into some transcendent ideas that I’ve been wrestling with as well. Great tune, great lyrics, and a fun thoughtful listening experience for fans of folksy Americana music.
Motel Sundown – “Your House”
-From first listen, I found myself drawn to the stylings of Motel Sundown. The effect on the acoustic guitars is great right from the start. Once the vocals enter, the song feels positively angelic. The harmonies have these delicate layers that feel simultaneously comforting and uplifting. The 70s classic rock guitar riffs help to further the Fleetwood Mac vibes that I get on this one. Basically, this song sounds like what it would be like to have Stevie Nicks and the Staves do a cowrite in 2024. It’s wonderful, a genuine treat, and the kind of song I don’t want to sing along to… because I’m so enthralled by the existing vocals I just shut up and listen.
Jessie Schupbach – “Sane”
-There’s an easy going style to this song that makes it easy to connect with right away. My favorite part is easily the harmony vocals as they make the rest of the song shine. The lead does a nice job of offering up the narrative that pulls the listener in. The swaying rhythm of the song feels like it takes elements of folk, pop, and even some light jazz to create a fun and accessible sound. This is definitely one that I’d feel comfortable putting on a playlist to share with friends for background music or to listen to carefully and connect with the words. It’s a nice folksy tune.
