Three outrageous exploratory ALT POP tracks for our adventurous readership

MisterMoon – “Cowboy Heaven”
-This song demolishes the concept of genre in the best way possible. There are elements of country, pop, and heck even some electronic music here. The bouncing between dynamic elements that are traditional or classic with those more heavy-handed contemporary approaches makes for a truly magical sound. This might not fit with the type of traditional country that you’d expect to find on a site like EarToTheGround, but honestly the dynamics of the vocal harmonies made this one a definite “yes.” The lyrics seem allegorical, seeking a place called “Cowboy Heaven,” which is a destination that seems to have an Oz-like place to fulfill dreams, with a difficult road to get there. It’s a quizzical yet delightfully mysterious lyrical theme conveyed by some beautiful layered vocal work. Check it out!

MICHA – “Drunk”
-Fans of emotive singer songwriters will find a lot to like in this unique track from MICHA. The balance between the piano and the acoustic guitar makes for a truly beautiful sound. The plaintive and expressive lyric on “More drunk than I’ve been in years and years and years of lovin.” Wow. You just have to hear this one. The way the production “breathes” to allow the chorus to cut through makes for an insanely emotional sound. I find a lot to like about this one.

Virens – “From the Fire”
-Every once in a while a voice comes along that just stands out from the crowd. That certainly happened on first listen of the track from Virens. It’s rare that I run across a song that doesn’t seem to have a genre, but this song is probably in that realm. We’ll call it alt pop. What is most important is that it has an artful amalgamation of sounds and effects that create a genuine emotional response in the listener. The vibey blend of moving rhythm and relatable lyrics like “I’m still hurting” definitely make it so that the listener can feel a connection with the artists’ message.
