Adam Kharita – “Someone You Don’t Adore”
-The easy comparison for me on this track is another Adam… that of Adam Melchor. Let me tell you, this song has all the joyful chord changes and melodic progression that you could want in a track. Kharita’s songwriting is, in a word, charming. There’s a nice meandering sense to the track that feels literally like a musical walk in the park. The lyrics are about dealing with heartache (or is it rejection?). The dreamy production and clever songwriting really sets this track apart from the folk crowd and it’s an absolute joy to hear.
Claudia Combs Carty – “Such a Long Time”
-When I shared this song with a friend, I mentioned that it’s for fans of Carly Simon. I think that holds up after a few more listens. I adore the intimacy of the recording. This is a great example of production supporting the message of the song and not getting in the way of the purpose of the track. This is a song that’s about more than just the moment of a breakup, but also the long aftermath and continued pain. Carty’s emotional delivery and expressiveness captures the sense of love and loss incredibly well. This song aches with sincerity.
Aden Gray – “Empty Distractions”
-I’m a sucker for a good first line and this track has it. “Where’s the fun in getting everything you want?” The song goes on to explain – not surprisingly – a complex relationship. It moves from a bit of a sad opening into a celebration that the relationship is over. “I don’t have the space to be worried about shit like that.” It’s an emotionally complex song about looking back on the relationship while distracting yourself. Gray has captured the emotional rollercoaster of a breakup really well, complete with some fantastic acoustic guitar work and a beat that will get everyone dancing. I can picture this one being a ton of fun to sing live at a concert with a bunch other people cussing along on the chorus.
