Nicky Diamonds – “The Ballad of the Lonesome Rose”
-This song is a time machine. The moment you click play you will be transported back to the early 20th century in the beautiful origins of country music. The acoustic guitar, the crooning sincerity in the vocal, and expressive lyricism all work well. The high harmony over the “don’t wanna leave” lyric in the chorus works exceptionally, punctuating the “wait til the morning to leave” sentiment of the song. The track is bilingual, so I can’t comment on the Spanish lyrics, but I appreciate how the song integrates the two cultures with such ease. It’s a beautiful snapshot of the integration of cultures in the American southwest. I hope everyone listens to (and falls in love with) this remarkable song.
Willy Tea Taylor – “The Cattleman”
-The expressive acoustic guitar on this song is going to capture your attention, but when Taylor’s vocal enters the track you will sit up in your chair. The raspy depth feels a bit like vintage Johnny Cash. The lyrics have a sentimentality and expressive honesty. If you like the slow burn of throwback country music with the punch of contemporary lyricism, give this one a spin. Taylor is a talented artist.
Micah Subar – “I Don’t See Lovin”
-When they invented the genre of alt country music, they probably had a song like this in mind. It fuses together elements of roots country, a dash of blues, and a pinch of rock. It’s a cool sound with a groove that will keep listeners engaged with easy going lyrics that are relatable. I like a lot of the elements of this song, but the electric guitar highlights are my favorite. It’s a vibe and all fans of alt country should give it a spin.
