Three brand new tracks in the indie pop and indie rock world that you need to hear

Kat McKinney – “Sadderday”
-This is a song about balance, maturity, and adulthood. It’s about figuring out how to make it in life in the craziness of “growing up” and finding what makes you happy. There’s a lot of complex emotions in this song. McKinney’s performance shows an understanding of the lyrical complexities here, all while delivering a vocal performance that conveys the angst and anxiety with brilliant precision. The title is a clever play on words about sadness and living for an existence on the weekends. This is highly relatable.

Holly Wild – “Inside My Head”
-The emotions of this track hit right away. There’s something about the chromatic chord changes on the chorus and the desperation from Wild’s vocal that makes it really work well. The expressive and dynamic writing style brings together aspects of indie pop and emotional pop rock. The lyrics have a psychological dimension to them that creatives (especially) will enjoy. This is a fantastic performance by a talented rising star!

Everyday Dogs – “Tokyo Rose”
-So as a historian and music lover, I have to say that I was surprised to hear this mashup. For the uninitiated, “Tokyo Rose” was the name of a Japanese propaganda voice during WWII that sent messages in English for the American soldiers to hear. It was intended to demotivate the American soldiers. Similar things were done in other theaters of the war (and subsequent wars), but it was quite a surprise to hear it in a song in 2023. The up tempo rock energy is infectious. The vocals are well done and the guitars are outstanding. It’s a fun kind of pop rock with a unique lyrical concept.
