Three creative, innovative, and engaging examples of indie pop music

Devon Cole – “1-800-GOT-STRESS”
-There’s an infectious pop energy to this song. It’s got a delightfully flippant way of dealing with something that we all face; stress. Some of us are feeling this more than others, but it’s a really powerful sentiment. It’s about a phone number to deal with stress. I’m not sure if this number actually exists and I’m too scared to call it, but honestly it’s a great idea. The lyrics are about how people in your life sometimes just don’t seem to “get it.” Sometimes it feels like calling a hotline would be easier than talking to people in your own life. The dance energy makes the song a lot of fun, despite being about a serious theme.

Weakspell – “Weakspell”
-You’ve never heard a song like this before. I know this. It’s a captivating bit of experimental folk and pop that blends for a sound that is truly unique. The layers of distortion and electronic dimensions in the background of the track make for a fascinating ethereal experience. It can be a tad challenging to understand the lyrics in places, but the mood of the track begs for listeners to close their eyes and just ease into the music. It’s not about hearing each moment in precision, but rather falling into the musical mix in more of an existential way. This song is more of an experience than just a track to listen to. If you take time to really meld with it, though, you will certainly feel something.

Jacob Steele – “Blackberry days”
-If you’re looking for a nice consistent groove and some clever lyrics, give Jacob Steele a spin. The track definitely has a cool energy about it. It’s the kind of song that will make you feel really good that you knew about it before your friends. The lyrics are about the summery goodness of blackberries, black coffee, and enjoying your circumstances. It does a nice job of capturing an attitude of gratefulness. If you’re just feeling good this summer, you’ll find a lot to like about Steele’s cool songwriting style. This is an excellent example of the type of indie pop that puts a big smile on my face.
