Shallow Alcove – “Blonde phase”
-About thirty seconds into this track you’re going to understand exactly what is meant by the term “alt pop.” It’s undeniably a pop flavor but it just doesn’t sound quite like anything you would hear on actual pop stations these days. It’s got a clever lyrical concept about different versions of ourselves over the years. It’s got a good self-reflective element. There’s an overarching vibe that reminds me a bit of the Maggie Rogers style in music currently. It’s a whole mood and a lot of folks are going to enjoy it.
Maddox Lim – “Hollow dreams”
-I was blown away by this performance the first time I heard it, so I clicked on the information about the artist and was blown away again. Maddox Lim is a 13 year old artist producing this music in a garage! Can you IMAGINE!? The amount of talent here is absolutely outstanding. The phrasing, the sense of melody, and the overall production is really impressive. If you’re looking for a pop sound that has energy and momentum to it, give Maddox Lim your attention. This is a good song that would be welcome on a lot of playlists and Lim is an artist to watch in the future. If this is 13, the sky is the limit!
Moonlight Zoo – “If only”
-The piano energy of this track is really powerful. The interesting thing about this sound is that it is almost like a collection of pop sounds from the past forty years or so, yet I can’t imagine hearing this on pop radio right now. But I definitely would support this being on the radio! The up tempo energy and optimistic lyrics are really well done. Of course I love the harmonies on the chorus. This feels like one of those 80s-influenced tracks that would make its way onto a lot of playlists of multi-generation groups; it’s a likeable sound with a soaring lead vocal and an accessible, sing-a-long chorus.
