Jesse Correll – “An Icy Cold”
-From the moment I clicked play on this song, I was captivated. Correll’s sincerity is immediately evident. As we enter into a season of icy cold here in the midwest, the energy of the track resonated in my bones. The poetic lyricism from Correll shows a creative engagement with complex emotions. The use of strings in the background and some haunting vocal harmonies (from the inimitable Anna Tivel, no less) make for a gorgeous blend of unsettling and sweetly cathartic. This isn’t just a folk song; it’s a work of theatricality. This is a beautiful, artful masterwork.
Rainbow Girls – “Doesn’t make any sense”
-This is a magical piece of music. The lead vocal is absolutely beautiful and then the harmonies enter and make it even more powerful. The subtle, unhurried energ of this track is perfect. If you’ve ever been in a relationship where you are more hopeful than the other person about things working out, this song is for you. I absolutely adore the layers of the organ that give it an old fashioned, classic style. Call it folk or Americana, no matter the category the clever songwriting and deep human connection reminds me of great songwriters like John Prine and Blaze Foley. The simple question, “why can’t we have it?” That’s it. What a soulfully pleasing, engaging folk song.
Micah Subar – “A tribute”
-If you’re looking for a sweet, bluesy country tune, give Micah Subar a spin. This track feels like a lot of classic influences rolled into one beautiful track. There’s a Chris Stapleton vibe to the band, but Subar’s vocal style and overall style takes the track in a slightly different direction. The lyrics are certainly rooted in the blues. The soulful energy of the track focuses on what feels like a missed opportunity for “what could have been” in a relationship. I appreciate the way the optimism and the sadness are so inextricably linked in the lyrics as well as the instrumentation. This is a delightfully complex song.
