Three delightful new folk tunes for your Friday

Alex Dunn – “Southern star”
-The calming acoustic guitar lays down a beautiful basis for this song. Once the vocal enters, there’s a timelessness to the track that strikes me immediately as noteworthy. The lyrics feel poetic, charming, and engaging. The production does a nice job of letting the hypnotic acoustic work direct the listener toward the main melody. Once the background vocals enter, the track transforms. It’s a bit folk, sure, but it’s also got this classic energy to it that feels like it defies genre and era. It’s a beautiful song that should appeal to a lot of different fans.

Jake Feeney – “Evaporate”
-The acoustic guitar commands attention on this track right from the start. Feeney’s vocal feels like someone you’ve heard before. There’s a familiarity in the composition that resonates really well. The carefully chosen production layers do a nice job of lulling the listener into feeling as much as hearing the message of the song. Fundamentally the song is about motivation; it’s a song about mental health as much as it is relationship. That said, the introspective lyrical choices had me wondering if Feeney read my diary from some stages of my life. I’ve certainly felt a lot of the emotions expressed here and others will most likely connect with the heartfelt sincerity of this track.

Rachel Fannan and Jacob Miller – “Sacred Regard”
-From the first line “sip after sip, sacred regard” I knew I was in for a treat with this song. The mix reminds me a dash of the Civil Wars but also the Milk Carton Kids. There’s a profound sadness to the composition that most assuredly will find a welcome audience from our readership. The chromatic chord changes on this track feel deeply satisfying to listeners of classic music. Blending together Americana, folk, and folk rock elements, the song presents a thoughtful reflection on those moments being with someone that feel… well, sacred. It’s about specialness, connection, and intimacy. This is a beautiful song that represents a beautiful moment between people.
