Olivia Zegers – “Taller”
-There’s something special in Olivia Zegers’ vocal tone that won me over right from the start. It’s not too much of a stretch to say she’s in the Lizzy McAlpine style. The easy going, nostalgic element of this track is really wonderful. If you grew up in a world that seemed so much simpler, this song will resonate. I particularly appreciate the expressive acoustic guitar work that transitions from the chorus back to the verse. I’m not sure that I’d ever go back in time as these lyrics indicate, but I sure do love the sentiment of life when it was simpler. This is a beautiful track.
Luna Keller – “Temporary Disarray”
-The calm banjo work on this track does a nice job of setting the mood. The vocal from Keller is wonderful, providing a solid presence right in the middle of the mix, conveying the lyrical concept clearly. If you’re feeling a little disheveled in this part of life (and whomst among us is not?)… this song is almost an anthem for the disaffection around us. It’s a song that feels like sophistication meets a desire to explain and understand the complexity of our world. Although they don’t sound anything at all alike, there’s something about Keller’s writing that reminds me a bit of Joe Purdy’s social commentary. This is fascinating folk pop music and well worth a spin from everyone.
Haquin – “10ft Wall”
-If you’re looking for a delicate singer songwriter vibe in your folk pop curation, definitely give this new track from Haquin a chance. There’s a subtle quality to it that makes it feel like you should lean in and listen closely. The orchestral element gives it an artful folk quality that I quite adore. The chromatic chord changes are a real treat, as well, creating this comforting essence to the track that gets me on every listen. I honestly like so much about this song; it’s the kind of music I would write if I could. It’s fragile, yet moving. If you’ve been around ETTG for any length of time, you’ll hear immediately why I like this song so much… it gets many things right. It’s a treat.
