Jillian Lake – “Human”
-If you’re new around here, maybe you haven’t seen our coverage of Jillian Lake, but she’s one that we’ve featured a few times already. We’re back with another feature because it’s really, really well done. There’s an intimacy to this recording that makes it stand out from the crowd right away. Typically I like to save a song and put it alongside other artists so that others can bring their fans to new music, but this song… this song just needs to be by itself. It commands, absolutely demands your attention. Please, spend some time with this one. The lyrics are about what it means to be human, to reject all of the falsification around us. There’s a holistic dimension here that I appreciate. Maybe the biggest compliment I can give is that I really want to listen to this song with Maggie Rogers; that makes more sense if you know Maggie’s catalog. I just imagine sitting there feeling the connection and visceral grasping that is at the heart of Lake’s lyricism here. She’s striving so evidently, so powerfully to feel human, alive again, “like I used to.” In a world that is changing so fast around us, this is what art is all about. This is what it means to feel alive, to share our skin in a way that ultimately bares our soul. I could go on, but I won’t. Please, if you haven’t yet, click play on this.
