Three brand new folk pop tracks, including the latest from genre legends Johnnyswim

Lauren Mian – “Undertow”
-I don’t always think of heavy percussive energy when it comes to folk pop, but it really works here well in this new track from Mian. The vocal is outstanding, which allows the listener to connect with every detail of the song. The soaring lines on the chorus give a real sense of the emotion of losing someone “in the undertow.” Something about the phrasing and energy makes it feel like a dynamic indie pop track and the approachable storytelling make it feel like a quintessential folk song; the combination is infectious and powerful. I’m sure that a lot of our followers will appreciate this engaging style from rising artist Lauren Mian.

Olivia Reid – “Serene”
-There’s a peaceful, cathartic energy to this track that stole my heart right away. Reid writes with a softness that feels like having a private conversation with a dear friend. The production elements do a nice job of creating an atmospheric, almost cinematic style to it. The lyrics highlight the need to find moments of serenity, to seek out that level of comfort. In such a time as these, when the world feels like it’s particularly out of control, it’s nice to be reminded of messages like this. It’s energy work. It’s healing work. It’s incredibly necessary for humans regardless of who you are or where you live. I find this track to be particularly meditative. I hope others will give it a chance as well; it’s beautiful.

Johnnyswim – “Sweet Tangerine”
-If you’re a fan of folk music at any point in the past decade, I’m certain you’ve heard (and probably love) Johnnyswim. Click play on this song and you’ll hear why they are so popular. The vocals are both outstanding, so when they blend together, they are even greater than the sum of their parts. It’s a beautiful, almost breathtaking style of folk duo music that continues to impress. This specific song, “Sweet Tangerine” uses the metaphor of a sweet tangerine about the need to enjoy the sweetness in life because it isn’t something you can hold onto forever. It’s a wonderful encouragement for us to appreciate the precious, sweet moments in our lives. I adore this sentiment and the vocals are so delicious… this is just a remarkable piece of songwriting and performance. Have I gushed enough yet??? Just listen and enjoy. It’s a treat.
