Amelie Lucille – “Foolove”
-I’m really glad to be living in the human timeline where music like this track from Amelie Lucille, in the folk subgenre with artists like Lizzy McAlpine and Phoebe Bridgers. The emotionalism is raw and sincere right from the start. There’s something inherently intimate about the style of the recording. Lyrically, it’s about a foolish love, more distracting than purposeful, yet you can’t seem to avoid it. The track has a hauntingly effective harmonica element that dances well with the acoustic guitar, creating this almost ominous energy to the track. “I don’t want this anymore…” is a repeated refrain about feeling the failure, yet understanding that you can’t quite get out of the situation. It’s tragic that this song is so relatable to so many listeners. It’s a gem.
Rachel Cousins – “Little Help”
-There’s a calm accessibility to this song that caught my ear right away. The production balances the strings and the vocal really well, allowing the quality vocal to cut through the piece in just the right way. The lyrics roll from line to line with an almost poetic style. I appreciate the sincerity and honesty in the lyric about “praying for a breakthrough” with that aching feeling of working toward something but not being able to find your way. The concluding sentiment, “I might need a little help” is a pointed, significant conclusion. If you are hearing this and you need a little help, I hope this track is the nudge you need to call that person, reach out for that appointment, or renew that medicine. You’ve got this. Thank you to Rachel Cousins for singing with such vulnerability and clarity; this song alone feels like a therapy session in and of itself.
