Strange Familia – “Porcelain”
-There’s a rowdy energy to this track that I definitely appreciate. It’s not rowdy as in chaotic, but more like energetic. The entire lyrical theme is a dedication to attractive skin… yep, that’s it. But you know what? It really works. Some of the blips and pops in the background of the production feel a bit more 80s than what we usually feature, but it just works here. I appreciate the evident character in the lyrical turns of phrase… and the vocal performance has a versatility that is outrageously enjoyable for the listener. This song has that perfect balance of a singable hook with these unexpected production details that feed the dopamine receptors because you’re just not quite sure what you’ll hear next. It’s the opposite of a predictable rock song… yet it has this power chorus that feels satisfying every time it spins back around. This one is definitely worth your time… and inclusion on your party rock playlist!
Rome Evers – “Something in the way”
-If you’re a music fan of my distinction (let’s not say “age” ok?), then when you see the title of this song you might thing of the title line from George Harrison’s “Something.” Let me assure you, this is a very different track in both style and substance. The theme is that of romance, but the instrumentation and overall composition style is much more modern. There’s an element to the production that feels vaguely industrial, with the resonance of the backing track echoing uniquely. Yet there’s a gritty, almost intimate style to the mix on the vocals that makes the listener lean in and listen close. If you’ve ever been captivated by someone and can’t shake your thoughts about them, this song will resonate with you.
Remedies – “Truth for Lies”
-I love the piano work on this track. I’m not sure what it is about this chord progression and style, but it feels timeless and satisfying to me. Yet… when the electric guitar power chords enter the track, the good gets even better. The expressive lead vocal is a focal point, but I appreciate how the disparate elements come together for what feels like a final product that is “greater than the sum of its parts.” Lyrically, the theme is about someone believing delusions, living off of lies. If you’ve ever been connected with someone who spits so many lies that you feel like you question your reality, then this song will definitely resonate. I was here for the song from the opening chords, but it feels good from start to finish.
