Olivia Barnes – “Oyster Song”
-If you’ve been around my writing for any length of time, you know I don’t throw around a John Prine comp very readily… it’s gotta be good. And let me tell you, this new song from Olivia Barnes has absolutely captured the spirit of storytelling. I like the way the intimate recording style feels like sitting in the corner of a corner bar or small venue just tapping your toes to this great story song. The phrasing reminds me a bit of Roger Miller at times, but the overall ethos reminds me of Kristofferson. Barnes sings with these ordinary elements of life with observations of people smoking, singing, and loving. The skill of observation can really be a superpower and Barnes does it really well. “Sometimes you need a little thrill to remind yourself you’re not that old… sometimes you need a little chill to remind yourself you’re not all that cold.” The writing here is that beautiful balance between plainspoken and wise. This is my kind of music; I’m incredibly honored to have found this and to get to be the person who tells you about Olivia Barnes, a rising star of a songwriter.
