Creature Canyon – “Bad Wishes”
-When I tell people that I’m a fan of indie rock, this is the sound that I want them to imagine. It’s cool, groovy, with guitars that drive the sound and vocals that are easy to connect. There’s just the right amount of distortion on the production to make it stand out, but it’s not so much that it makes the main melody hard to follow. The lyrical style is perfect, too, with some aspects that make you feel like you can follow then some enigmatic/abstract elements that make you feel like you might be on the outside looking in a bit. I’ve definitely had some bad wishes in my life, so on its surface I can relate. That said, the air of mystery on this track is the point. The sometimes-falsetto vocal makes it feel like a bygone era of rock music… and we’re sure glad to have it back.
SodahVerse – “Super Wrong”
-Okay so when I first clicked play on this song I thought the opening line was clever. It’s about how people are always on their phones and it makes you feel disconnected. I feel that. Then I read the PR copy and learned that this artist is 11 years old!!! I was absolutely floored that this artist could write something so insightful. The instrumentation is sophisticated and interesting. The lyrics are outstanding for any age, standing out in a crowd of indie rock that often misses the mark of cultural commentary. Let me be clear; I said “yes” to this song because it caught my attention THEN I found out about the age of the artist. I can’t imagine where this career is going to go, but I am here for the SodahVerse journey!
REVERSE REVOLUTION – “I Remember”
-From the very start of this song, I’ve been hung up on the band’s name. Does a reverse revolution mean I have to surrender power to someone? I’m not sure I like that. But I digress. The song itself is outstanding, a reflection on youthful summers spent playing with friends. Oh how nice it would be to go back to those halcyon days. The vocals have a youthful vibrancy to them as well. Upon reviewing the PR copy on this band, they are made up of artists who are 11, 12, and 13 years old! That’s really impressive! This Aussie band is making waves all the way across the ocean here in the US. This is a sound, complete with some outstanding guitar solos, that deserves to be widely shared. Fans of clean indie rock guitar licks and sing-a-long style vocals will find a lot to like here. There’s not a good comp for them, but I’m sure fans of bands like Bush or Foo Fighters will find a lot to like here.
