If you’re a fan of danceable pop music, definitely take a moment to check out SOZI’s latest EP Dream, which kicks off with a track called “Superstar” that will have you feeling like the star of your own show. The whole EP has an energy of dance and optimism. Fans of the Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter turn in pop music currently will find a lot to like about SOZI’s sound.
The opening track “Superstar” has a pop beat with some minimal (yet effective) production. The bass keeps the song pulsing like a heartbeat. SOZI’s vocal is the focal point of the track. The lyrical content is minimal, allowing the listener to get lost in the movement and energy of the track. It’s perfect for a dance party or a live show.
The second track “Out of the Blue” has a bit more of a mysterious energy to it, swirling around with an enigmatic style. As the pre-chorus builds, there’s a genuine sense of electronic dance dynamism. The listener feels that a drop is coming, getting ready for some dynamic action. This is definitely a track that leans more EDM than the pure dance pop of the opening song. The lyrics feel a bit more emotional, chronicling a night out and perhaps a new beginning in a broken relationship. It bumps with energy that makes every repetition of the drop satisfying all over again.
“Good Girl” is one of those songs that feels like it might be just a smidge ironic. It’s about living in LA and being a good girl, not even a little bit naughty. There’s something about the snazzy pop production style that makes me think that perhaps there is a bit of a party life here. Considering the entire EP feels like it’s taken from an LA EDM set, I am going to go with my initial impression that these lyrics are ironic. I appreciate the tongue-in-cheek lyricism and dynamic pop energy of the track.
The final track “Lost in You” feels like a pop track in the vein of Roan or Carpenter, for sure, allowing SOZI’s vocals to take center stage again. The lyrics are a bit on the relationship and love side of things, with the repeated “I’m lost in you” cry that feels emotionally sincere. If you’ve ever been in love and experienced the trance-like state of just wanting to always be with someone, then you’ll definitely resonate with this sentiment. It’s also just a fun danceable song, like the rest of the EP.
Since I’ve used the words “dynamic” and “danceable” for pretty much all of these tracks, I think I’ll conclude with that sentiment. If you’re a fan of pop music that you can dance to, especially with a dash of electronic production style, then definitely check out this new EP from SOZI. It’s got a nice mix of serious emotion with feel-good celebration. Spin the record, dance with your friends, and get lost in the moment.
