Who saves the hero? – “Enemies”
-There’s something about a good power chord and a soaring lead vocal that makes me feel like I’m a young adult again, full of all the angsty frustrations of young love. This song captures some of the bands that I listened to in that life stage like Sum41 or Good Charlotte. The lead vocal is really good, allowing the harmony vocals on the chorus to come through really well. There’s a chill lyrical concept about wanting to stay friends and not become enemies in the wake of – seemingly – a failed relationship. “How do we go from strangers to lovers now enemies?” That’s one sentence that tells a whole story. It’s really well written and performed. This feels so familiar; I like it a lot.
Loviet – “STIFFY”
-If you’re looking for a percussive style that propels the song along well, check out this track from Loviet. There’s an emotionalism in the vocal lines that definitely puts it in the pop punk category. The power chords do a nice job of setting the energetic mood. The whole production is well done with some balanced audio energy that feels like it captures the emotion of the lyrics well. The story is about looking back on a broken time, knowing that it was formative in making who you are in both good and bad ways. The lyrics almost ache for healing, which I hope the artist is able to find eventually. There’s a deep wound evident in the track, but the sound that it has produced is really beautiful, allowing others to connect with and maybe heal from similar pain.
Scott Cole – “what else is new?”
-This song is a bit of a time machine. I know the opening feels a bit more like alt rock singer songwriter than pop punk, but trust me that as you stay with it there’s a cool punk ethos. Usually “punk” for me means power chords, but here it’s as much about the lyrical content and the overall attitude as it is the instrumentation. If you’ve ever been in a complex jealousy-fueled relationship, this song will absolutely connect. All told, I appreciate the instrumentation and the consistency of the vocal… and maybe the fact that it made me feel like it was 2005 all over again. Great tune!
