The Unofficial EarToTheGround Summer 2025 Folk Pop Digital Festival! – Second Track – Jonathan Stephen Simons “Wayward Water”

Jonathan Stephen Simons – “Wayward Water”
-I do love a good alliterative title, so they sort of had me at hello here. Once I clicked on the track, though, I was struck by this interesting combination of pop and folk that feels… satisfying. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but it even has a bit of a blues angle to it. But if you listen to this track through, the “some higher power” line, complete with the full vocal harmony, really pops. It’s a sound that just makes you feel cooler. I get the sense it’s toying with spiritual imagery (sin, waywardness, etc), but at the same time it feels like it’s a bit more about finding yourself despite the chaos of life. Even if you don’t lean into the lyrics, just listen to the absolutely fantastic bassline. The whole composition is good, but I’d share this one for the bassline alone.
