Ava Valianti – “Distant”
-If you’ve ever been in a long distance relationship, this song will resonate deeply. It’s about missing someone and only getting to see them on the weekends. There’s a softness to the mix that allows the vocal to really connect. It leans a bit more pop than folk, but it definitely fits the genre. There’s an energy to the chorus (especially) that makes it feel radio ready. It’s a storytelling pop style that I feel like would have been really popular in the late 90s or early 2000s. The lyrical blend of contemporary and nostalgic elements connect with me, conjuring memories I forgot about long ago. I appreciate the connection between the energy of the musicality with the sentimentality found in the lyrics; it just all works together really well for a folk pop hit!
