Moonmill – “Early Bird”
-Everything about this instrumentation feels comfortable and engaging. The delicate vocal does a nice job of introducing the listener to the lyrical concept. Lyrically, it’s almost like reading someone’s diary that chronicles common actions with little nuggets of detail and meaning; it’s sweet. The light folksy style has elements of 60s folk revival and folk country instrumentation. The end result is a captivating energy that feels both rooted as well as spiritual. I’m not sure how it feels so grounded and “floating” at the same time, but it does. The vocal harmonies are my favorite part, but the energy of the whole piece is worth your consideration.
Dylan Bruce – “I Hope”
-This is one of those songs that’s impossible to listen to without tapping your foot. The overall energy of the track is endearing, with a hopeful message about looking forward to a relationship that may work out. If you’ve ever dreamt of being with someone, this song will definitely connect. It’s a love song for a relationship that doesn’t exist yet (or is at least in early stages). As a naturally pessimistic person, I really appreciate the optimism captured here. The shifting from the low vocal to the high on the different verses really works well, creating a real sense of movement and momentum. I hope you all like it as much as I do.
Brooke Livingston and Astronaut Troy – “Paper Doll”
-From first listen, this song reminded me of something from Phoebe Bridgers and/or Abby Gundersen. That’s high praise around here. There’s a light, atmospheric energy in the background all while having this earthy indie style that works really well. The combination is the encapsulation of the concept of “indie pop” in many ways. The lyrical concept is yearning to be noticed, a concept that many people can connect with yet feels deeply personal here. I may not be the target demographic of a song like this, but I have to say that I can relate to the mix of boldness mixed with an aching, underlying fear. It’s an interesting track with a sensitive lyrical concept that I’m sure will connect with a lot of readers.
