EP Review: SOZI – Bloom

If you’re a fan of introspective singer songwriters, definitely check out this engaging new four-song EP from SOZI. There are elements of indie pop singer songwriters alongside a spirited, energetic writing style that’s sure to win over a lot of fans regardless of genre.

“Seconds” is the opening up tempo track with some electronic elements that provide a base for the bouncy, energetic vocal. The mix is rewarding, allowing the listener to fully connect with each vocal line being delivered. The line about the “best years of my life… can’t you see it?” really hit me. I’m considerably older than this artist, but it was amazing how they pulled me back to this era in my own life. I felt a genuine connection right from first listen.

The second track “Fall Away” has more of the same up tempo energy. The line “I think it’s time to heal now” feels just right. There’s a delicate style to some of the vocal phrases that works perfectly. There are times that SOZI has a power vocal like Amy Winehouse and other times this sweet expressiveness more along the lines of Dodie Clark. Both versions of the vocal work well on this one.

The rapid lyrical style on “Just For a Minute” fits perfectly with the lyrical concept of being overwhelmed by life. It’s introspective and, honestly, a bit challenging to the listener to think about the pacing of life. The final track “Set Me Free” has a bright energy in the keys that leads to a rhythmic powerful pop energy. The vocal sounds a bit more mature and sophisticated here. This one reminds me of an artist we’ve featured named Emily James. SOZI is definitely in that company of rising indie pop artists.

This EP is definitely worth your time if you’re looking for a powerful pop vocalist and lyrics that demand your attention. Give it a spin.
