Laureate – “adagio for a fleeting moment”
-I wouldn’t say I “like” this song so much as I feel it in my bones. Everything from the delicate acoustic to the heartfelt lyrics all resonate with me. It’s a well-written song with a careful production balance that invites the listener into an intimate recording. The lyrics feature the moment when you realize you want to be with someone but you know it won’t be forever; it’s about focusing on the intimacy while it’s there because so few relationships truly make it long term. It’s a mature contemplation for a song that feels like it takes aspects of pop and classical music together.
Mike Martinez – “Stranded”
-The acoustic guitar part of this song is really nice. The solo vocal in the opening is good, too. But the vocal harmonies… oh my word… the harmonies are really special. This song does a nice job of providing a cathartic style that’s sure to find a lot of fans among our readership. There’s a unique balance in the energy that makes it both optimistic yet a bit strangely haunting. It’s hard to explain, but if you give it a full listen you’ll hear what I mean; it’s a great tune and the harmonies are spectacular. Spin this one.
Blair Borax – “Call Me Lazy”
-As someone who has been called lazy, I definitely relate to the lyrics on this song. It doesn’t matter how much you accomplish, there will always be critical of you. This song has some clever lyricism about guarding your heart after being hurt. It’s a beautiful, bouncy reflection on the feelings of loss and rejection in the wake of a broken relationship. “What if I don’t wanna be tethered to another person forever?” It’s a song about being cautiously optimistic about the future all while learning from the pain of the past. The balance of the acoustic instrumentation, vocal, and horns is really wonderful. It defies genre in the best way possible.
